In her talk, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak spoke about the interdisciplinary and related it to "Scattered Speculation." More specifically, she looked at Chartism as an attempt at the public use of reason and offered a reading of Mrs. Gaskell's norvel North and South (1854-55). She pursued the questions thus raised through a consideration of the writings of Rosa Luxemburg, Antonio Gramsci, and W.E.B. Du Bois and concluded with a reading of Tillie Olsen's novel Tell Me a Riddle (1961).

University of Zielona Gora, Poland, April 24-25 2012
The conference was organised by the Institute of History at the University of Zielona Gora. Its aim was to present the Enlightenment from various perspectives and as the period in European history where we find intellectual sources of the present condition of the world, what is naturally related to the subject-matter of the ENGLOBE project. For this reason, it was important to show connections between the Enlightenment and modernity in philosophy, historical processes, economic thought as well as in the area of fine arts. The idea of the conference was also to show images of the Enlightenment movement in different places: in Poland, Ireland, or in accounts written from the perspective of British traveler, James Cook.

The conference proceedings were published as a book.
Hugo Grotius’ best-selling book on the Truth of the Christian Religion (1627), based on the poem which he published in 1622 in Dutch, is the starting-point for a century of cosmopolitan reconsideration of Christianity, comparing it to the wisdom of classical antiquity, Judaism, Islam. This conference traces this book through the ages, through rational criticism, inter-confessional dialogue and colonial reflections. Faith and reason, conversion and natural religion, Christian unity and confessionalist orthodoxy, religion and Enlightenment for short, are among the dimensions to consider to have a fresh look at the issue of religion in our modern age.
The conference takes place on the 10 and 11 February 2013 at the University of Potsdam. For more information, please visit the conference website: http://www.uni-potsdam.de/en/grotius
The conference begins with a lecture by Prof. Jonathan Israel from Princeton on "True Christianity and the Radical Enlightenment" that was organised by the ENGLOBE team.
